Omaezaki Final
He described the hours before the competition started as a period where he knew with certainty that something good was about to happen, akin to the anticipation described in Kate Bush’s song "Cloudbusting" ("I just know that something good is gonna happen"). This feeling of peace and confident expectation was particularly pronounced during his experience at the Omaezaki Final competition.
According to Bernd, the day was marked by synchronicities, auspicious events, and a positive mindset all contributing to a sense of inevitability about success. He emphasized the importance of good breathing, mental clarity, and being open to "lucky breaks" and positive vibes. Even as he approached what seemed like his final chance, he maintained an intuitive understanding of the wave’s dynamics and his role in its navigation.
The Flow Experience
During the critical moments of the Omaezaki Final competition, Bernd described a seamless connection with the wave, devoid of fear or strain. It was a culmination of aligning factors the set, the wind-shift, and his own readiness that enabled him to perform at his peak. This effortless synchronization with the elements is what defines the flow state in sports a harmonious blend of skill, intuition, and external conditions.
Bernd saids:''if I could find that same level of purposeful repose, of Peace, in everyday life outside the narrow confines of a windsurfing setting, then I would surely no longer sail.''
Bernd Roediger’s journey through the mental state of flow offers valuable insights into the essence of peak performance in sports. It underscores the importance of mindset, preparation, and seizing opportunities when they align. Whether on the waves or in life, embracing flow can lead to moments of profound clarity and accomplishment.
His experiences serve as a compelling reminder of the magic that unfolds when skill meets serendipity. In the video below, you'll see a part of the interview where Bernd gets emotional talking about it.
His Setup
"I’m an intuitive rider. I don’t have any formulas for my equipment, other than change. I enjoy constantly shaking things up experimenting with different fin setups, from Bonzers to 'true quads' (quads with larger front fins than rear). My only rule is not to get too attached to any setup for too long."
Want to see him surf? The best place to catch Bernd Roediger in action?: "My favorite spot has been, and always will be, Ho’okipa, Maui" he says.
